Research and Extension Centre, Kanatal

The Horticulture Research and Extension Centre (HREC), Kanatal is situated in District Tehri Garhwal on Chamba- Mussoorrie Road. It is about 28 Km from Ranichauri. Presently, it is functioning under the administrative control of the College of Forestry, Ranichauri. It is spread over an area of 12.6 hectares at an altitude ranging between 1700 and 2200 m above msl. The geographical and climatic conditions of the centre are best suited for the production, propagation and maintenance of nursery of different horticultural crops especially temperate fruit crops. The research centre, with orchards of temperate fruit crops, falls under the fruit belt namely “Chamba- Mussoorrie Fal Patti”declared by the State Government.

Horticulture Research and Extension Centre, Kanatal has extended its farm activities nearly in 12 ha mainly for the establishment of orchards of various temperate fruits.

MANDATES OF THE CENTRE:

• Collection and maintenance of elite germplasm of temperate fruit crops and to ensure quality germplasm of these crops to farmers.
• Mass scale production of quality planting material with improved varieties of temperate fruit crops for fulfilling the demand of the farmers of Uttarakhand State
• Establishment of post harvest/ processing facilities and facilitation of these facilities to farmers and institutions of the state.
• To impart need based trainings and other extension activities for the promotion of cultivation of temperate fruit crops especially in the neighboring areas of the centre known for fruit belts.
• Improvement in quality and yield of fruit crops without any adverse effect on soil and environment through up gradation of production technologies.
• Identification of farmer’s need, planning and execution of surveys.
• Optimum use of the basic natural resources and infrastructure.

OBJECTIVES:

• World collection of mother stocks at one place.
• Mass multiplication of disease- free clonal rootstocks for quality sapling production.
• Identification of suitable cultivars for temperate hill condition.
• To evolve new hybrid cultivars with desired quality in targeted fruit crops.
• Development of appropriate packages for Integrated Nutrient Management, Integrated Pest Management and Orchard Management according to fruit-based cropping systems for Uttarakhand hills.
• Development of products and protocols for post harvest processing and value addition in mandated crops.
• To standardize rain water harvesting models for temperate fruits.
• Development of skills among entrepreneurs for fruit based enterprises.
• Area expansion under temperate fruit crops.
• Reservoir of horticulture technology at one place.
• To develop centre as a knowledge centre for extension officers, students and scientists.
• To ensure availability of seed and planting materials of temperate fruit crops to the farmers
